Why you should identify your core values

Your values are the lenses through which you view yourself and the world around you. They are the tenets that which we live by. They are at the heart of who we are, and they need to wholely resonate with integrity. They are what we stand for, guiding our behavior and providing us with a personal code of conduct.

Understanding your core values leads you into defining your Personal Truth. And ultimately, knowing and accepting yourself is the first step to moving forward and making positive changes in your life.

When you stand in your personal truth, you are able to consciously choose:

  • where you live

  • how you make and spend money

  • how you spend your time

  • who you choose to build and hold relationships with

  • how you see the world

  • how you relate to yourself

If you step back, you notice that the bullets above are choices that we get to make in this life - choices that we should always, always make for ourselves and ourselves first. But sometimes, external voices or expectations muffle our Personal Truths and make it more difficult for us to make the choices that are right and true for us. We might give in to making choices that others expect us or want us to make. The "others" might be loved ones, peers, or even society as a whole.

The result is us not feeling good about those choices.

But when you develop your core values, they are crystalized and prioritized to form a values system, which I call Personal Truth. As you solidify your Personal Truth, you gain the power to focus on making choices for you, no matter what external forces have to say about it.

Standing in Personal Truth can lead to:

  • Increased self-esteem - always knowing that you are living in integrity

  • Fulfillment - making the choices that align with who you are at your core

  • Resilience - being able to acknowledge oppositions without negative impact on you

  • Flow - the ability to move through life with more ease

I have always been the "black sheep" of my family - the way I perceive the world, the way I interact with faith and spirituality, and how I view what is right or what is wrong. Having such opposing views to my loved ones was very difficult for me. I questioned myself constantly, I let them manipulate me into making choices that they felt were right, and I struggled to understand my place in the world because I was living a life that I didn't own.

For a long time, I didn't know my values. I couldn't stand in my Personal Truth.

It wasn't until I understood my own values system that I was able to take my power back. Now, I have an unwavering sense of who I am, what I want, what I don't want, how I want to live my life, who I want in my life, and what I will and will not tolerate.

Now I am able to:

  • set boundaries

  • walk my path outside of a conventional career

  • speak my truth, no matter how controversial

  • be okay with disappointing people or people not liking me

  • say no whenever my heart isn't fully in it

  • be in and listen to my body

And truly, so much more...

So, how do we get to this place?
